Bentley recently announced that its Continental range of sedan, coupe, and convertible will only be marketed as flex-fuel-only cars by June 2010. This move is to meet the goal of the company to reduce the carbon dioxide emission of their fleet by as much as 15% by 2012.

The range of Continentals will get the flex-fuel variant of Bentley’s W-12 6.0L engine. It will only be the powerplant that will be offered for the range. The engine can operate using gasoline, bioethanol E85, or a any proportions of the mix of bioethanol and gasoline.

The 2011 Supersports Convertible from the Continental range which was unveiled during the recent Geneva Motor Show is also flex-fuel capable. The Supersports convertible is claimed to be the fastest convertible the brand has ever produced.

The decision of Bentley to flex-fuel their Continental range will mean that half of their units this 2010 will be compatible to flex-fuel. Only three models of Bentley will not be flex-fuel. These will be the Azure sedan, the Brooklands coupe, and the replacement to the Arnage, the Mulsanne sedan. Take note that the Brooklands will reach the end of its line this year.

The Mulsanne will also be converted to be able to run using ethanol in the future but Bentley did not give any specific time table for this move.

Aside from converting their vehicles to flex-fuel, Bentley is also considering cylinder deactivation. There can also be a possibility that these two technologies will be combined, and consumers will not really feel the difference because the car’s performance will not be compromised.

Amid the global drop in sales of luxury cars, Bentley is aiming high to make all of its fleet operate on biodiesel. The first step to achieve this goal is by making a big investment to fund the strategy the company wants to take.

The luxury car manufacturer expedites the production of their first biodiesel fueled car and aims to unveil this Bentley during the Geneva Auto Show in March.

Details about the car’s feature were not disclosed but top executives promised that the vehicles will still be true to the Bentley tradition. The performance will still be excellent and the engineers are also aiming for fuel efficiency and passing CO2 emission standards.

Bentley released a report during the Detroit Auto Show entitled Bentley and Biofuels. The pages of this report outline the plans of Bentley in the future.

The company aims to release a line of bioethanol running vehicles before 2012. Officials revealed that the engineering works for this vehicle begun and the projected delivery of flex fuel vehicles for their fleet will be this year.

Bentley is allocating funds to further strengthen their brand by keeping it updated with the current market trends and demand.

Bentley sold 7604 units in 2008. The U.S. arm of the company was hard hit with the 2008 economic slump. Their sales dropped by as much as 32% or around 2863 units.

Biofuels are better fuels than fossil fuels since they are biogdegradable, provide better lubrication, and is non-toxic — fingers crossed for Bentley’s Green Cars!
